A great topic that has come up in conversation over the past week with certain clients was
“Joe - How come you never do any of those fancy exercises you see on the internet, and would they benefit my training”?
And the simple answer is, it DEPENDS.
Everybody is different, we all have different bodies and mechanics that allow us to utilise different forms of movements. We need to nail the basics right first, then introduce more as we progress.
Now, I don’t know about you. But in the last few years we have seen a massive rise in ‘functional’ training. With the likes of CrossFit, HIIT classes, Grit, Heart Rate training, you name it. Now I just want to put it out there that I have no problem at all with these types of training methods, I like the fact they bring a sense of community, social aspect, and team effort into play. Which is sometimes forgotten about within training.
But, I’ve seen exercises that are performed via influences, so called 'celebs' and bloggers who have a vast number of followers that have no Personal Training or Coaching background, let alone train a real person prescribe exercises that are down-right dangerous.
Now I understand we all must start somewhere and find our own ‘motivation/inspiration’ to exercise. But what I’m seeing daily is people spending their hard-earned cash, getting injured and seriously putting themselves under a lot of risk following a plan that doesn’t suit their goals or body type.
Guys, put it this way. There’s a reason why the simple and most basic exercises like presses, pulls, squats, hinge movements, weighted carry movements have been around for years and have gotten RESULTS.
In fact, a lot of people who come to me for my 1-1 Personal Training services have been a victim of this in the past. Yes, sometimes we must learn from our mistakes. But always go in with the approach and ask yourself this:
Will this exercise benefit me in anyway?
What will I gain from doing this?
Doing the simple stuff will get you far greater results then performing ‘fancy exercises’. Don’t get me wrong there are some great ‘fancy exercises’ that do work, it’s just about being smart and making sure you’re aware of the outcome.
Always be intuitive, and always be open minded when It comes to training. My role as a Personal Trainer/Coach is to educate and teach, but also to find out exercises that work for that individual. But don’t be afraid to try them, don’t be scared of what people may think. Do it for you and YOU only, but if you do feel out of your depth always ask help from a professional.
